SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Sandy on Sunday morning, Mar. 26, according to Sandy Police.

The shooting occurred in the area of 11000 block of S. Eagle Bend Rd. around 1 a.m. after officers responded to a report of a man who appeared to be in a mental health crisis, according to Sgt. Greg Moffitt of Sandy Police.

Officials say the officer located the man walking who then reportedly “presented a threat that resulted in our officer discharging his firearm.” The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Following protocol for officer-involved critical incidents, a team comprised of investigators from multiple police departments, excluding the one involved, has begun an investigation into the incident. The officer has also been placed on paid administrative leave as a part of the protocol.

Moffitt said their department “takes a really progressive stance” with training and focuses on mental health crisis and de-escalation tactics. He continued to say these situations are difficult as they can take “a very Jurassic turn” in a matter of seconds.

“In this case, it took a tragic turn of events when what we are really trying to do is preserve life and not end it,” Moffitt said.
