SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – San Jose's new Mayor Matt Mahan has had his work cut out for him the last few months as storms have rocked the Bay Area.

Now that the worst is passed, Mahan is focused on getting the city refocused back on the key issues.

"Things like crime, street homelessness, cleaning up the city, just basic core functions of government that I feel like slipped a little bit during the pandemic," Mahan told KCBS Radio’s Eric Thomas on Friday's "Ask an Expert."

Mahan's budget proposal for the city is arguing for funds to be concentrated on a few foundational issues.

"I'm arguing that we need to double the rate at which we hire police officers, we’re severely understaffed," he said.

For homelessness, Mahan is proposing that instead of funding slow and expensive affordable housing projects, interim shelters should be more of a priority.

To help clean up the city, the new mayor is trying to bring back a program that organized residents into teams to take care of their blocks.

He also plans to enhance the 311 app for the city so that the city is more responsive to requests for service.
