A 24-year-old San Francisco man drowned in Woodward Reservoir on Sunday afternoon, according to officials.

The man, identified as Oscar Rafael Coello-Flores, was swimming from the Mountain View Point campsite area to “Area A” when he appeared to become tired and was “overcome by the elements as he struggled to keep above the water’s surface,” according to a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office release.

Mountain View Point is not labeled on the county’s map of the reservoir.

At about 1:50 p.m., deputies arrived at the reservoir. The Special Vehicle Operations Unit, paramedics, air support, firefighters and the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team were called in to assist with a search effort.

Crews searched for over an hour until the Dive Team found Coello-Flores about 45 feet from the shore of Mountain View Point. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office took over the investigation, which will include a forensic autopsy.

“The Sheriff’s Office death investigation is active and ongoing,” read the release. “More will be learned about (the) cause and manner of (the) death at the conclusion of the autopsy and toxicology laboratory tests.”
