U.S. cities that blazed the marijuana legalization trail now have a high concentration of 420-friendly vacation rentals, a new study shows.
Why it matters: Cannabis-cations are one piece of the growing multibillion-dollar weed economy .
By the numbers: Out of the 50 largest U.S. cities in states where recreational marijuana use is legal, San Francisco ranks 26th when it comes to lodging that markets itself as marijuana-friendly.
- Our city has almost 14 pot-friendly rentals per 100,000 residents, according to the study by travel information company Upgraded Points .
- Across the bay, Oakland comes in at 11th with about 22 per 100,000 residents.
The big picture: Three Colorado cities — Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs — are among those with the highest concentration of pot-friendly rentals, per the study .
- Burlington, Vermont; Las Vegas; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Portland, Maine, also top the rankings.
- The list includes cities where recreational marijuana use is legal, but sales are not.
State of play: Surprisingly, San Francisco isn't among the priciest cities for pot-friendly rentals.
- Those would be San Diego, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Phoenix, where a one-night stay costs around $300 to $360.
- Meanwhile, an average night at a 420-friendly stay comes out to about $246 in San Francisco and $232 Oakland.
Yes, but: The cannabis industry in San Francisco — and California more broadly — has struggled to bounce back from pandemic-driven economic hardships.
What to watch: While this year's 420 Festival was canceled due to lack of sponsorship dollars and slowed demand, there's still plenty going on this weekend to celebrate cannabis culture , including themed cocktails, art exhibitions, cannabis farming workshops and more.
