Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke out against Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone after he announced last year she would be barred from receiving Holy Communion.
Pelosi, speaking at an event at Georgetown University’s Center on Faith and Justice on Thursday, brought up the Catholic archbishop of San Francisco while discussing politics and her faith.

“I have a problem with my archbishop,” Pelosi said, “and I figure that’s his problem, not mine.”
She also said she was pretty much “in sync” with much of the teachings of the Catholic Church, although the Archbishop of San Francisco has denied her Communion over her stance on abortion.
“We go right to the one issue, because everything else, we are pretty much in sync when it comes to the social compact of the Catholic bishops and the rest. But they are willing to abandon the bulk of it because of one thing,” the California Democrat said.
She also spoke about the 13th anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which is also known as Obamacare, and specifically the opposition to the bill by the bishops. “Thank God for the nuns,” Pelosi said, crediting them for helping with the legislation.
The California congresswoman has been barred from receiving Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of San Francisco since May 2022, when Cordileone penned a letter announcing Pelosi would be barred from the sacrament due to her stance on abortion.
“A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others,” Cordileone said in the letter.

The Catholic Church regards abortion as a “moral evil,” according to its teachings.
Cordileone said he has made numerous attempts to speak with Pelosi about her views on abortion “to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, and the danger to her own soul she is risking.”
