A body found at Pier 39 has been identified as 55-year-old Vandergrift after being pulled from the water Wednesday afternoon. The radio DJ was declared missing in February and was last seen at his home one month ago on the 23rd.

A growing memorial has formed outside the studio of Wild 94.9 at 340 Townsend St. in San Francisco.

"He was the first radio host that I was listening to in the Bay Area. My commute was about an hour and a half, so that's all I had to listen to," a fan told KCBS Radio. "I just felt very welcomed by him and he introduced to me what the Bay was like and I was able to do some talkbacks on his show and call in sometimes and got to hear him out, yeah he was great."

The company tweeted a statement Thursday morning commemorating Vandergrift. "With a heavy heart, we must confirm that the body found near Pier 39 on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as our dear friend, family member & colleague, JV," the station wrote. "We are devastated to know now that JV is gone. Please keep his wife Natasha, his family, and close friends in your thoughts and prayers."

A popular figure on Bay Area airwaves since the 1990s, Vandergrift was known for hosting The JV Show on weekday mornings.

The examiner's office has not yet revealed Vandergrift's cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.
