A bicyclist was rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped underneath a commercial dump truck early Tuesday in Otay Mesa, officials said.

The rider and vehicle collided in the dark at Britannia Boulevard near state Route 905, leaving the man underneath the truck around 4 a.m.

“He was not under (the) load fortunately but this extrication took some time,” San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Chris Babler told OnScene TV.

Crews from San Diego, Chula Vista and Cal Fire worked to stabilize the vehicle so they could slide the man out from under it, an effort that took around 55 minutes, Babler said.

The man was transported to a local hospital with injuries considered life threatening. Babbler said he likely suffered internal injuries.
