One dead after being shot by police at South Bay transit center

SAN DIEGO — One person is dead after being shot by a San Diego police officer at a South Bay transit center Sunday night.

Around 8:56 p.m., officers were called to the Iris Avenue Trolley Station about a report of a disturbance with a weapon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

The trolley continued south, rolling into at the San Ysidro Trolley Station in the 700 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard around 9 p.m. Two SDPD officers arrived shortly after.

According to SDSO, the officers gave the suspect verbal commands to drop what they believed to be a firearm in his hand, but they failed to do so. The suspect then advanced towards the officers, law enforcement said, prompting one of the officers to fire his rifle.

One of the officers shot his department-issued rifle at the suspect, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect was pronounced dead by authorities at the scene.

The firearm the suspect used was a Glock replica .177 CO2 BB gun that shoots metal pellets.

The transit center was closed Sunday night as authorities investigated the incident, but as of 5:39 a.m. normal operations had resumed, according to MTS.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been identified by the Medical Examiner’s office, according to SDSO.

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene late Sunday to investigate the incident, per the countywide memorandum on officer-involved shootings, Lt. Adam Sharki with SDPD said.
