Pedestrian hit by SUV, suffers life-threatening injuries in downtown San Diego

A 27-year-old pedestrian crossing a street against a red light was hit by a SUV and critically injured early Sunday in downtown San Diego, police said.

The 54-year-old driver was heading north on Fifth Avenue near F Street shortly before 12:40 a.m. when the pedestrian tried to cross east to west on a red light, said police Officer Sarah Foster. The pedestrian crossed into the path of the 2020 GMC Yukon and was struck.

The man suffered a life-threatening brain bleed and was transported to a hospital to be treated, police said.

The driver stopped and cooperated with officers. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the collision, police said.
