Rip City Project's Andrew Hanlon believes former Boston Celtics point guard Malcolm Brogdon could be the veteran answer at point guard to maximize the talents of the San Antonio Spurts' franchise cornerstone, Victor Wembanyama.

"San Antonio will be a popular rumored destination for any guard who could provide stability for Victor Wembanyama," Hanlon wrote. "The Spurs have already been linked with Trae Young and a reunion with Dejounte Murray, but neither of the Atlanta Hawks guards make sense with Wemby. Anfernee Simons would be a good option, but Brogdon would come cheaper and with a lower usage rate.

"He could provide the same veteran presence that he gave Portland last season, but he would be a much better on-court fit with Wembanyama as a point guard who can manage an offense, play in the pick-and-roll and spot up behind the 3-point line as an outlet when the French phenom gets doubled in the post."

Malcolm Brogdon could be satisfied with Spurs in way he never could be with Boston Celtics

San Antonio never truly figured out their point guard situation during the 2023-24 season, throwing Jeremy Sochan out at the position for half the year before inserting Tre Jones back into his natural role in the starting lineup.

Jones responded well to the assignment, averaging six assists in 27 minutes per game for the year, but the fact that Gregg Popovich even experimented with Sochan at the 1 (to little success) shows that he's looking for more in his backcourt.

Brogdon could be the answer, and simultaneously, the Spurs could be the answer for his career. The Atlanta native didn't seem to have any issues playing for a rebuilding squad in Portland but he did have an issue with being a backup on the Celtics -- and had an even bigger issue being included in the original Kristaps Porzingis trade proposal.
