Athletes aren't the only ones getting in practice for the regular season, the same is true for the coaches and support staff.
And the student athletic trainers, who are an important part of any athletic team.
Now they're getting off the sideline and putting their skills to the test.
Athletic trainers are usually making a mad dash to help a player who may be hurt.
But right now they're racing against the clock.
This is the Athletic Trainers Olympics. And bragging right both on and off the field are on the line.
Nearly 700 students from more than 40 school districts from San Antonio and the surrounding area are participating.
And the competition runs the gamut.
There is an ankle taping competition.
Trainers also test their knowledge in a Jeopardy-style quiz bowl covering anatomy.
"We were all super nervous the entire time," said Reagan Bolt, a senior at Smithson Valley. "We studied like crazy beforehand."
On the field there is an obstacle course, a crutch race and cooler top and tape toss.
"I still have to do my tape toss over there hopefully basketball will help me out with that one," said Natalie Huff, a senior at Clark High School.
When she's not playing on the basketball team at Clark, state champion Natalie Huff is helping her fellow athletes.
"I started training this last spring ball for football," said Huff.
Ariana Lopez is a junior at MacArthur and also enjoys the dual role.
"I'm a softball player and a varsity cheerleader at my high school so I'm typically on the other side of it but when I'm not playing sports I'm on the sidelines helping taping ankles giving water that sort of thing," said Lopez.
And after a busy season, the trainers are getting their turn to show their stuff.
"It's important that we also get showcased too because we are a big part of an athlete's career," said Lopez.
"It really cool because these kids work really really hard we wouldn't be able to do the things we do as staff athletic trainers without them," said Revae Rivera, a staff trainer from Churchill High School. "They help us out so much."
Quite a few of these student athletic trainers out here want to continue helping others in college and beyond.
"Someone like myself who's interested in going into the medical career field, this is great," said Lopez. "I get to get hands-on experience, have fun with my friends and fellow athletic trainers while learning all at the same time."
Staff at the Alamo Area Athletic Trainers Association say the trainer team from MacArthur high school came away with the overall trophy this year.
