Military families are getting some help from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation by connecting them with prospective employers.
It’s called the Military Spouse Fellowship program and it’s geared toward hiring our heroes.
The program has a 91% job offer rate. It brings a lot of peace of mind to military families who may have to relocate here or to other parts of the country.
Human resources analyst Robyn Hawkins knew she would always go back to work.
She’s grateful the transition from staying at home to working with mom was effortless. This is all thanks to the Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Fellowship Program.
I was a temporary employee for about a month and a half after being an intern, then was brought on full-time," says Hawkins.
The program connects career-ready military spouses with over 150 affiliated companies with a starting average salary of $70,000. Hawkins was more than happy to accept the job.
It made the move a lot easier rather than just coming here and not knowing anything or having anything set up," says Hawkins.
Retired General Juan Ayala works closely with military families in San Antonio. He says, "we are tapping into a great pool of talent that we hadn't tapped into."
He adds military spouses face an unemployment rate of 22%, and adds the program here boasts over 50 employers who look to fill jobs fast.
If you have a stable spouse that's employed and that also helps keep the family together and keep them economically viable," said Gen. Ayala.
There is no cost to participate for the employer or the military spouse. Hawkins is happy she did it.
There are so many organizations that do participate I would hope that all the spouses would be able to find a career path that would work for them," says Hawkins.
