SLCPD Officers Arrest Woman in Road Rage Incident

SALT LAKE CITY — Patrol officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division safely arrested a 21-year-old woman who is accused of aggravated assault and assault on a police officer following a road rage incident.

This investigation started at 5:51 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2023, when a community member called 9-1-1 after another driver cut them off and then pulled a gun before driving away.

A few minutes later, the same suspect vehicle was involved in a crash but the driver left the scene in her car. The victim of the crash followed the suspect, but stopped when the suspect pulled a handgun and shot out their own back window. There was no reported injuries or any other property damage as a result of the shooting

During their investigation, officers located the suspect, later identified as Alenny Gonzalez Lira, in the yard of a home. As officers were talking with Lira, she began walking away. Lira began fighting with officers, but they took her into custody.

While officers walked Lira to a police car, she spit in the face of an officer.

Officers booked Lira into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on one count of Felony Aggravated Assault, one count of Felony Discharge of a Firearm, one count of misdemeanor Carrying a Dangerous Weapon under the Influence of Alcohol, one misdemeanor count of Using a Dangerous Weapon in a Fight, one misdemeanor count of Assault on a Peace Officer, one misdemeanor count of Failure to Stop at Command of Law Enforcement, one misdemeanor count of Failure to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, a misdemeanor count of Driving on Suspended or Revoked License and one infraction of Failure to Keep Proper Lookout.

Charges are only allegations, and every arrested person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is not the custodian of record for jail booking photos. Utah Code 17-22-30 mostly prohibits the release of jail booking photos. Generally, a jail booking photo can only be released by the custodian of record after a conviction or when law enforcement determines the person is a fugitive or an imminent threat to a person or public safety. In Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian of record for jail booking photos.

Photos of the damage to Lira’s car and of the handgun recovered by officers are being released. Media may use these photos with credit to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
