Officers arrested a man on Tuesday after he stole a delivery truck and hit the truck's own delivery driver with it, says the Salem Police Department.
At around 7:20 a.m., Salem Police officers were sent to the McDonald’s Restaurant in the 1000 block of Lancaster DR NE after witnesses reported a man hit by a delivery truck.
Officers found the driver of the delivery vehicle, a 67-year-old man, injured in the parking lot.
The officers learned this delivery driver was standing outside his truck when an unknown man got inside the truck and drove away, running over the delivery driver in the process.
As the suspect fled the scene in the stolen truck, he struck another car and damaged the parking lot. A short time later, the suspect reported driving recklessly on northbound Interstate-5.
The suspect eluded several law enforcement agents during a pursuit, but ultimately came to a stop when he crashed in the area of US-22E and Young Street in Woodburn.
The suspect, identified as Eloy Tello, 42, was arrested l on charges related to hit and run, assault, vehicle theft, and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Tello is due to be arraigned Wednesday at the Marion County Criminal Court Annex.
The hit-and-run victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
