A woman died in the hospital after she was hit by a driver Tuesday afternoon while cycling in Salem, police officials said.
The crash was reported at about 3:45 p.m. near the intersection of Leslie and High Streets Southeast.
Salem Police officials said 53-year-old Marganne Allen was riding a bicycle south on High Street when someone driving a pickup on Leslie Street “entered the intersection and crossed the bicyclist’s path of travel, resulting in a collision.
Allen was critically injured and taken to Salem Health, where she later died of her injuries.
The driver, who was unhurt in the crash, is cooperating with police. At this point they have not issued any citations or arrests in the case.
On Friday, police identified the driver as a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agent who was on-duty at the time of the crash.
Considering Salem Police's longstanding partnership with the DEA on a task force, Keizer Police has been asked to handle the investigation.
Officers closed the intersection for about four hours.
