Charleston Housing Authority ends fiscal year with surplus, in ‘strong position’ ahead of overhauls
CHARLESTON — The city’s Housing Authority passed a $62 million operating budget its leaders say sets it up for financial health as it shifts from just maintaining its buildings to overhauling many properties for the first time in the agency’s history. The budget, which the authority’s board passed unanimously Sept. 28, forecasts the agency will make nearly $6.5 million more than it expects to spend during the 2027 fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. The 200-foot-tall condo and its neighboring townhomes have been sitting empty since February 2025 after a city-mandated evacuation for structural concerns. The property is in the process of being sold, most likely to a buyer who will tear it down and begin anew with another residential or mixed-use development.
