BOSTON —The Rays placed second baseman Brandon Lowe on the 10-day injured list Monday due to low back inflammation.

Infielder Vidal Brujan was called up to take his place on the active roster.

Lowe said he “felt something” as he slid into third base during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, and his back became increasingly sore through the second game and into Sunday morning. He tried to loosen it up by swinging but said it didn’t help.

Lowe missed much of last season due to a lower back injury and was sidelined earlier this year for a few days with an issue in a different part of his back. He said Sunday the new issue was in yet another area.

Lowe has struggled much of the season, hitting .199 with nine homers (but only two since April 28), 29 RBIs, 63 strikeouts (a 31.3% rate) and a .686 OPS. He also was involved in two misplays on pop flies during the road trip.

Brujan, who can play pretty much anywhere on the field and has good speed, has been called up several times, hitting .250 (5-for-20) for the Rays. He was hitting .238 at Triple A with four homers and 17 RBIs.
