2-year-old boy dies after being shot at St. Pete home, police say

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – A 2-year-old boy has died after being taken to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday night after being shot in St. Petersburg.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:10 p.m. for reports of a child being shot inside a home near 46th Street and 15th Avenue South.

Following the shooting, police said a family member was driving the 2-year-old boy to the hospital and lost control of the car and crashed a few blocks away from the home.

The young child was then taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It’s unclear if the young boy sustained more injuries in the crash. Officials said it appears no one else was hurt during that car crash.

SPD said the person who was driving the car is being questioned by detectives as they try to piece together how the incident unfolded.

At this time, authorities don’t know what led up to the shooting but say it’s an isolated, domestic incident at a home and are still working to identify the shooter.

“This is just a very sad situation,” St. Pete Police Spokesperson Yolando Fernandez said. “For whatever occurred to have ended up with a baby, a 2-year-old boy, getting hurt, and getting shot by this type of gun violence is very, very sad.”

Fernandez said the boy had just turned 2 in April.

According to a press release, SPD said the young boy did not survive his injuries and passed away at the hospital.
