'Its seems like when it rains, it pours literally for the Cardinals' Katie Woo discusses Cardinals' recent tough stretch

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It seems like not a whole lot is going right in Cardinal land at the moment.

The St. Louis Cardinals 2024 season started off decently. While they were still finished two games under a .500 record at 14-16, it was decent due to how stacked the Cardinals opening month began, from starting the season with a four-game series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, along with six games against the incumbent NL Champions Arizona Diamondbacks, and three games each between the 2022 NL Champions Philadelphia Phillies and incumbent NL Central champions Milwaukee Brewers.

Well since then, the vibes have certainly felt more darker and pessimistic in May, with the Cardinals dropping seven out of their last ten games, which includes a current four-game losing streak that involved losing a series to the Chicago White Sox and losing two games to the New York Mets both at Busch Stadium. Not to mention, the Cardinals were dealt a very injury blow with the loss of catcher Willson Contreras.

"It's been a really tough stretch in Cardinals land," said Katie Woo, Cardinals writer for The Athletic. "For the majority of April, was it the kind of baseball the Cardinals were happy with? No, but when you factor in their strength of schedule, the travel schedule, who they were playing, and who they were missing, you thought 'ok, there's potential here.'"

Woo says it feels losing a series to the Chicago White Sox at home and Contreras being out for a while has changed the vibe of the Cardinals season now.

"It seems like when it rains, it pours literally for the Cardinals," said Woo. "While they were in a good spot, even if their record didn't suggest it at the end of April, there's no denying this is a pivotal time in their season if they want to turn it around and that's how crazy things can change in just a week."
