All 11 people involved in a Sacramento crash that left three dead were related, according to the family.
The driver of the sedan carrying all 11 passengers, for reasons unknown, lost control and crashed into a tree, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Two women were in the car, one of them died at the scene, and another was seriously injured. The other nine passengers were children ages 3-8.
Sacramento police said the driver was speeding Wednesday night around 8:15 p.m. when she slammed into the tree on San Juan Road west of Northgate Boulevard. Detectives said none of the children were in proper restraints in the car.
It's evident from the memorial at the crash site children were involved. People have been stopping by with flowers, toys, stuffed animals, dolls and Spider-Man toys to remember the young mother and the children.
The grandfather of the youngest victim drove in from Arizona and made his first stop at the memorial.
"I'm just sad that it happened this way," Terry Mangram said. "This is something I never prepared myself for."
Mangram said his grandson, 3-year-old Zayden Mangram, 3, was "very bright and happy."
He said his granddaughter, 6-year-old Jalayla remains in critical condition. He described Jalayla as somebody who "can recognize you being there."
"She will hold your hand. She will move," Mangram said.
Both children lost their mother, Shawna.
Mangram said Zayden was sitting on his mother's lap in the front passenger seat and both were thrown through the windshield. Shawna died at the scene. Zayden died at the hospital, according to Mangram.
He said he also wanted to be here for his son, Zayden's father.
"You have to be strong for one another but it's hard," Mangram said. "Every time I talk to my son about it, he breaks down."
Mangram asks for the community to help his family heal.
"Just pray for everybody. Pray for them," Mangram said.
Police said medics also took the driver to the hospital. There is no word on her condition or if charges will be filed. The driver has not been identified.
