A car crash in Sacramento, California, on Wednesday night left one adult dead and 10 others seriously injured, nine of whom are children, law enforcement said.

The children are all between the ages of 3 and 8, said Zach Eaton, a spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department. Eaton said everybody injured is either in critical or serious condition, per local outlet KCRA.

Eaton said Wednesday night that the cause of the crash, which happened at about 8:15 p.m., was unknown. The car was a smaller sedan, and after the crash, it did not catch fire. It is unknown whether the adult who died was the driver and if they were ejected from the vehicle.

Police said it was a one-vehicle crash, and the initial call they received said the car had crashed into a tree, but the investigation has only just begun. Ten ambulances were sent to respond to the scene.
