Mt. Shasta Ski Park targets December opening as El Niño winter nears
The strong El Niño being forecast for far Northern California could bring a warmer and wetter season than usual this winter, just as Mt. Shasta Ski Park prepares to open around the holidays for what employees hope will be a busy time. "Everyone's talking about this super El Niño, and we're hopeful it delivers a big winter," ski park spokeswoman Grace Hornbeak said in a news release. "But we didn't want to count on it. Our crew put in a summer of hard work so we can open on less snow and keep runs open longer, whatever this winter brings." Crews cleared brush and cut tree stumps across its runs. The work means the runs will need less snow to open safely, giving skiers potentially more days on the slopes if early-season snow is light, Hornbeak said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's winter outlook, released on Oct. 15, shows more precipitation, but whether that means more snowfall and a fluffy, white blanket for skiers, is not yet known. But Hornbeak said the park is optimistic that the El Niño conditions will bring plenty of snow to the 2026-27 ski season. The ski park is targeting a mid-December opening. Lack

Dead rat in a glue trap, rodent droppings found at this Land Park eatery. What else?
Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to the Land Park eatery after finding a dead rat and rodent droppings in the facility. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination. In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 8, through Wednesday, Oct. 14. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . How to report a business to the health department For readers who would like to report a local restaurant, food truck or café for health violations, you can file a complaint with the

A Mexican restaurant frequented by state workers and Sacramento residents alike is closing for good. The cantina served Sacramento for three-and-a-half years and was known for birria tacos, fish tacos, birria ramen and quesabirria tacos. The eatery came about as a result of an expansion of Tacos 34, a pop-up taco vendor in Sacramento. The name is dedicated to 34th Avenue in North Oak Park, where the owners grew up, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Thirtyfour Mexican Cantina (@thirtyfourmexicancantina) Thirtyfour Mexican Cantina did not respond to an interview request from The Sacramento Bee in time for publication. 7 Pizza Parlor Dishes From the Years Shakey's Had Banjo Bands and Long Tables
I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. Shakey's Pizza Parlor opened its first location in Sacramento in 1954, and by 1968 the chain had more than 340 of them, which made it a regular stop for Little League dinners, birthday parties, and Friday nights when nobody wanted to cook. The dining room was communal on purpose, with long rows of picnic tables, pitchers on the table, and a banjo-and-piano band playing Dixieland and sing-alongs on music nights. You ate next to strangers and mostly didn't mind.

Sacramento sculptor brings history to life, honoring Robert Louis Stevenson's honeymoon
The inspiration started with two boys needing a place to sit. Eric Hanson, who grew up in Sacramento, and his wife were living several years ago across the street from a Napa Valley middle school. “We had a split-rail fence around our house and the kids would wait outside for their rides to be picked up,” Hanson said. “One day she says, ‘There’s two boys sitting on the fence. That’s not good. The fence is going to fall apart. Go out and tell them to get off.’” Hanson did as he was told, but the boys returned the next day and sat on the fence again. This time, Hanson brought them chairs which they used the remainder of that school year. But Hanson got to thinking:i A bench might serve a better purpose. This realization has helped lead to the creation of a bench with life-size statues of 19th century author Robert Louis Stevenson, his wife Fanny Stevenson and their Irish setter cocker spaniel ChuChu. The bench, which is the work of Sacramento sculptor Garr Ugalde, will be dedicated Nov. 7, near where the Stevensons honeymooned in 1880 at the abandoned Silverado Mine. Stevenson, who was largely unknown to American
