Carroll tennis racks up Grayson
Carroll County’s boys’ tennis team is now 2-1 after an 8-1 victory over Grayson County on April 15 in Hillsville. The Cavaliers swept singles action as top-seeded Jabin Talley remained undefeated on the year despite playing with a quarter-sized blister on his racquet hand. Talley faced an early 3-2 deficit, but reeled off six of the next seven games to win 8-4. Ethan Richardson cruised for Carroll at No. 2 singles with an 8-1 victory, while No. 3 Paul Marshall earned an 8-5 win. Carroll’s Phoenix Baker claimed a win at No. 4 by an 8-2 count, while Garrison Wheatley emerged victorious at No. 5 for Carroll after his opponent retired with an injury. Louis Marshall made it a clean sweep for Carroll with an 8-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Talley and Richardson also teamed up for another Cavalier triumph at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory.
SOFTBALL: Maroons top Blue Devils, 8-0
INDEPENDENCE — Olivia Shockley pitched a 2-hit shutout April 17 and the George Wythe Maroons handed the Grayson County Blue Devils an 8-0 setback in a Mountain Empire District softball game. Shockley, who has an ERA of 1.40, struck out 10 and walked two in the win.
