Rainfall breaks 130-year-old record in downtown Charleston. And it’s still coming.
CHARLESTON — Warnings were sent out across the Lowcountry to alert of potentially dangerous flooding as record rainfall pummeled the peninsula in particular. The National Weather Service recorded 3.64 inches of rain Oct. 4, breaking the previous daily rainfall record of 2.51 inches set in 1893. While some areas were drenched in more than 5 or 6 inches of rain over a 12-hour period, others, such as North Charleston, only saw 1 or 2 inches. Earlier weather forecasts predicted scattered showers with a potential for a heavier rainfall heading into the evening. But flash flood dangers prompted the ...

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — Flash flooding struck parts of the City of Charleston and Mount Pleasant overnight into Monday, October 5, as torrential rain dumped several inches across the Lowcountry. Morning reports from CoCoRaHS volunteer weather observers are now helping the National Weather Service assess the event, and the numbers are staggering. The highest total so far is 7.66 inches on the upper portion of the Charleston peninsula, with several other locations around the city and Mount Pleasant reporting 4 to more than 6 inches in just one night.

Why Charleston issued a critical flood warning on a Sunday night
A dangerous night unfolded across the Lowcountry as a critical flash flood warning took hold of Berkeley and Charleston counties. What began as a rainy evening quickly escalated into an emergency situation, with rivers of water swallowing downtown streets, drivers getting stranded in submerged vehicles, and officials urging residents to stay off the roads entirely unless their lives depended on it. By late evening, the situation was serious enough that authorities extended the warning well past its original end time, giving little relief to a city already deep in crisis mode.

Tuesday: Turning breezy, with elevated evening tides and a beach erosion threat
Drier air will continue to push into the area overnight into Tuesday, but it won’t be enough to totally erode the cloud deck as some low-level moisture will remain trapped due to a wedge of high pressure building in from the north. We should see some breaks in the clouds, but otherwise, expect another mostly cloudy day across the area. We’ll start in the mid-50s, warming to the mid-70s in the afternoon (though that may be generous if cloud cover remains more stout). Of greater concern will be winds, especially the closer you get to the coast. Gusts will range from 20-25 MPH inland to 35-40 MPH at the coast. It could be a tricky drive over the bridges at times, so be alert to that. There’s not a formal Wind Advisory yet, but that may yet come with the overnight forecast update from NWS.
