EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A student in Roswell received a social media message Wednesday, stating that an attack on a school was “imminent”, according to the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management in New Mexico.
DHSEM says the message was received by students in other school districts across the state adding that law enforcement presence has been increased in response to the threat.
DHSEM is currently “coordinating information from local law enforcement and the FBI who are investigating the cause of the threats but currently, they are not considered credible,” according to a press release sent out by the department.
Apart from the department, Las Cruces Police also addressed the social media threat Wednesday, stating that “there does not appear to be a direct threat to any specific location or school in Las Cruces.” Police add that Las Cruces Public Schools were made aware of the threat on Tuesday, May 10 and notified parents as well as law enforcement.
Alamogordo Public Schools also addressed the situation Wednesday and is calling it an “anonymous shooting threat”. The school district adds the threat was made for Thursday, May 11, and was directed towards Alamogordo High School, Chaparral Middle School and Mountain View Middle School.
The school district also says the threat was reported to the Alamogordo Police Department and Otero County Sheriff’s Department and is currently under investigation.
“It cannot be determined that the threat is creditable at this time,” said the Alamogordo School District.
