ROSSTON – It was supposed to begin at 2 p.m., however, people began showing up much earlier for the Rosston Volunteer Fire Department’s BBQ fundraiser Saturday.

In fact, volunteers hadn’t finished setting everything up before people started arriving for the BBQ brisket, pork and chicken, along with cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, green beans and corn, not to mention a table full of desserts.

According to Fire Chief Judy Mayer, the BBQ was to raise money for tools needed by the department, make some needed repairs to trucks, buy personal protective equipment (PPE), defibrilator pads, suits, hats and purchase candy to be tossed out at parades. Mayer said the department is going to be more active in the community, especially the school. Plans are to pass out fire hats to children during the school’s fire day.

Future plans are to start hosting Bingo tournaments, she said, but the department is having to apply for a license first.

All of the food prepared was through donations of the fire department members and community volunteers.

Youngsters who showed up had fun playing on one of the fire trucks.
