Florida record El Niño rain may mean Lake Okeechobee releases to Stuart
El Niño is forecast to deluge Florida with a record wet winter, which could result in "substantial" Lake Okeechobee discharges to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon, water managers told TCPalm. The Army Corps of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District are warily watching rainfall and how it's raising the levels in Lake O and the St. Lucie Canal, which connects the lake to the river in Stuart. Rainfall is forecast to increase from 8 inches in November to 31 inches by March, SFWMD lead meteorologist Todd Kimberlain said at an Oct. 22 meeting of the Rivers Coalition, a Stuart nonprofit that formed to stop Lake O discharges to the east coast. The Army Corps already released 20.8 million gallons of canal water into the river through the St. Lucie Lock & Dam for one hour on Oct. 1, until the canal level dropped to below 15 feet, Col. Brandon Bowman said at that meeting. Lake Okeechobee level may require discharges Lake O's level was about 12½ feet on Oct. 26, up from about 12.39 feet the week before.
