Three Deliziosi Dishes to Order at Da Claudio

Though a weekday lunch in New York typically consists of a quick salad or sandwich to go, in Rome, the midday meal is an affair. Shops and non-restaurant businesses tend to close from noon to 2 or 3 p.m. — a frustrating situation when you need to pick up emergency toilet paper in the middle of the day, but delightful for folks looking to enjoy a leisurely meal complete with pastas, wines and other delicacies. And guess what? You can experience that tasty luxury right here in Lower Manhattan!

The impeccably decorated Da Claudio (21 Ann St.) offers up an ideal Roman lunch, one lush with delectable antipasti, pastas, vinos and secondi. There’s plenty to enjoy here for all palates, but if you’re looking to streamline their ample menu, here are three of our favorite dishes.

Polipo

Da Claudio’s octopus appetizer is a thing to behold, comprising fresh octopus, meaty potatoes and capers drizzled with an olive tapenade. Be sure to save some bread to mop up the leftover dressing once you’ve devoured everything else.

Spaghetti carbonara

The best way to judge an Italian restaurant is on the quality of this classic Roman dish, and Da Claudio’s absolutely rises to the occasion. The creamy carbonara sauce pairs perfectly with smoked pancetta and al dente spaghetti, and an extra heap or two of freshly-shaved parmesan kicks it up a notch.

Rigatoni all’amatriciana

The simple amatriciana sauce is a staple at Roman trattorias, and Da Claudio offers one of the best versions in town. Guanciale, tomato, pecorino, red chili flakes and red onions make for an impressively flavorful combination, and the thick pieces of rigatoni are a perfect conduit.

Be sure to save room for a post-meal cappuccino and their tiramisu, and you’ll net a decadent European lunch without having to brave summer air travel.
