High school roundup: Russell’s RBI-single lifts Lady Falcons to victory

CHURCH HILL — Haley Russell singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Lady Falcons held on for a 3-2 District 2-3A win over Grainger on Tuesday night.

Sydney New was 2 for 3 with a home run for the Lady Falcons. Jenna Thomas doubled and drove in a run. Jayden Ford added two hits, while Zetta Smith and Russell had one each.

Hadley Spears went the distance to earn the win for the Lady Falcons. She scattered six hits over seven innings with two walks and six strikeouts. The Lady Falcons overcame four errors to collect the win.

Allison Byrd homered for Grainger. She also took the loss in the circle, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Cherokee 8, King’s Academy 7

ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee jumped out to a seven-run lead in the fifth inning and held on for an 8-7 nonconference win over King’s Academy on Tuesday (April 23).

Cherokee scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Trailing 8-1 after five, King’s Academy came roaring back with five runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

The Lady Chiefs outhit the Lady Lions 13-7 and took advantage of seven errors. Hadley Ward was 3 for 4. Rachel Young and Kasie Bowman each went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs. Kennedy Dishner also had two hits and an RBI. Keircee Manis also picked up two hits for Cherokee. Both Young and Dishner doubled for the Lady Chiefs.

Dishner went the distance to earn the win, giving seven runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Greeneville 14, Volunteer 7

CHURCH HILL — Kyla Jobe hit two home runs, including one to start the game, to lead Greeneville to a 14-7 District 2-3A win over Volunteer on Monday (April 22). Jobe finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Lady Greene Devils. Lydia Darnell also homered for Greeneville. She went 2 for 5 with four RBIs.

The two teams put on a hitting show, with Greeneville racking up 19 and Volunteer 15. The Lady Falcons committed five errors to Greeneville’s two.

Abby Fisher and Russell each had three hits, while Jayden Ford and Jenna Thomas added two each for Volunteer. Elise Bous took the loss. The gave up 11 runs (five earned) on 11 hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Katelynn Trent pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Claiborne 16, Cherokee 4

NEW TAZEWELL — Claiborne used 10 hits and 10 Cherokee errors to pick up a 16-4 District 2-3A softball win on Monday (April 22). The Lady Bulldogs exploded for 10 runs in the third inning and held the Lady Chiefs at bay to force the mercy rule ending after five innings.

Kennedy Dishner suffered the loss, giving up 14 runs (only one earned) on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Shelby Helton finished the game, giving up three runs on three hits with one walk.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Greeneville 9,

Volunteer 0

CHURCH HILL — Brody Inscore, Samuel Gourley, Liam Polte, Austin Beets and Jude Dyer each scored in the first half as Greeneville cruised to a 9-0 win over Volunteer in District 2-AA soccer.

Cole Wilcox, Justin Banegas, Christian Banegas and Dyer each added a goal in the second half for the league-leading Greene Devils.

The Falcons host Cherokee on Thursday (April 25) for senior night. The festivities will begin around 5:30 p.m. with kickoff at 6 p.m.
