SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: Faile, Bulldogs blank Rocky Mount in soccer

Kaylee Faile scored all five goals (three in the first half and two in the second) and the Nash Central defense recorded eight steals on its way to a 5-0 triumph over Rocky Mount in a Big East 2A/3A Conference match on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (1-2 conference, 6-2 overall) earned their first Big East win of the season. Rocky Mount dropped to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Ella Bryant added an assist in the second half for Nash Central, which got steals from Madison Bridgers (three), Allie O’Leary (two), Addison Roughton (two) and Valentina Testa (one).

Faile’s 10 points came as a result of 10 shots on goal, while Roughton added two shots on goal and Mary Kate Bullock and Karyme Lozano had one each.

Isaura Lopez-Jimenez recorded seven saves to get the shutout in goal for Nash Central. Chandler Logan made seven saves in goal for the Gryphons.

Rocky Mount amassed 13 shots: Holidae Jackson had six, followed by Lauren Tedford with five and Amia Bryant with two. Five of the shots were on goal.

Northern Nash 2 Roanoke Rapids 0

Bailey Powell and Griffin Webb scored goals as Northern Nash pulled off a Big East 2A/3A Conference win at home over Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday night in Red Oak.

The Knights improved to 2-0 in the conference and 6-2 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-2 in the league and 4-2-1 overall.

Northern Nash currently sits atop the league standings in a tie with Franklinton.

Ashleigh Modlin assisted on Powell’s goal, while Sarah Cook provided the assist on Webb’s goal.

TENNIS

Southern Nash 9 Roanoke Rapids 0

Southern Nash’s boys tennis team remained unbeaten (8-0 overall and in league play) and earned its second shutout over Roanoke Rapids this season in a Big East 2A/3A Conference match Tuesday afternoon.

In singles, Frank Gonzalez won 6-0, 6-1 over Talan Harris; No. 2 Alex Underwood won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2) over Avery Garner; Luis Robles won 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 over Ryland Yeatts; No. 4 Gilberto Nunez won 6-0, 6-0 over Musa Gwanzura; No. 5 Julian Gonzalez won 6-2, 6-2 over Jack Moore and No. 6 Matthew Coble earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dawson Garner.

In doubles, the Firebirds’ No. 1 duo of Underwood and Frank Gonzalez took an 8-0 victory over Harris and Avery Garner, the No. 2 pairing of Nunez and Julian Gonzalez won 8-0 over Yeatts and Mooreand the No. 3 team of Robles and Coble won 8-1 over Gwanzura and Dawson Garner.

Roanoke Rapids fell to 1-7 in the conference and 1-7 overall.

FCS 7 Fayetteville Academy 2

Faith Christian played well in doubles and picked up a win in its Carolina Independent Conference opener against Fayetteville Academy at home on Tuesday.

The Patriots (6-1 overall) got singles wins from No. 1 Fenner Parker (8-3 over Jackson Massati); No. 2 Gavin Johnson (8-3 over Will Middleton); No. 3 Arby Bell (8-1 over Elijah Dowaud) and No. 4 Bryson Hollomon (9-7 over Fabi Flores-Diaz).

Faith swept the doubles matches as the No. 1 team of Parker and Gavin Johnson won 8-1; the No. 2 pairing of Bell and Hollomon won 8-0 and the No. 3 duo of Carter Johnson and Landon Hobgood won 8-4.

“This is the best doubles we’ve played all season and it’s what we’ve been working on the most, so I was excited to see how well we played doubles today,” said FCS coach Barry Nethercutt.

Fayetteville Academy fell to 1-1 in the CIC and 3-1 overall.

CFA 8, RMA 1

Rocky Mount Academy earned just win in singles and fell to 3-4 overall after a loss to Cape Fear Academy in a match at home on Tuesday.

The one win for the Eagles came from No. 3 singles Sammy Bowles, who outlasted Max Weckel 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.

CFA won the other singles in straight sets: No. 1 Hayes Gilbert over Christopher Harper 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Ben Kane 6-3, 6-4 over Thomas Honey; No. 4 Owen Watkins 6-3, 6-0 over Ethan Kim; No. 5 Levent Erdem 6-4, 6-3 over Gabe Henderson and No. 6 Max Sherman 6-0, 6-0 over Tae Cowder.

CFA swept doubles with Gilbert and Kane getting past Harper and Honey 8-5; Weckel and Sherman defeating Bowles and Henderson 8-4 and Watkins and Erdem stopping Kim and Cowder 8-2.

Franklinton 7 Nash Central 2

Nash Central fell to 2-6 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 2-6 overall after a league loss on the road at Franklinton on Tuesday.

The lone wins for the Bulldogs came at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles (names were not provided).
