SPRING SPORTS ROUNDUP: SWE softball rallies past Northern Nash

A pair of four-run innings (the fifth and sixth) helped SouthWest Edgecombe erase a 3-2 deficit as the Cougars rallied past Northern Nash 10-3 in a nonconference game on Monday night in Pinetops.

SWE improved to 4-5 overall while Northern Nash fell to 2-7 overall.

Deniya Mayo (triple, two RBI) and Mackenzie Moore (home run, double, four RBI) each had three hits for SouthWest Edgecombe. Ramzie Bryant (triple) had two hits and an RBI while Mckenlee Mobley and Kayle Ellis added the other hits.

Piper Jones and Emma Shingleton led NN with two hits each. Providing one hit each for the Knights were Kailey Burden (double), Emily Clay (RBI), Emma Hunt (RBI), Lara Sigers and Macie Sides (RBI).

Mackenzie Rogers picked up the win on the mound for SWE. She went all seven innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Jones took the loss for NN. She gave up 11 hits and 10 runs (nine earned) with four strikeouts and four walks through six innings.

Southern Nash 6 Corinth Holders 3

The Ladybirds rallied from a fourth-inning deficit to tie it, then came from behind again in the fifth inning to take the lead for good en route to a nonconference win at home over the Pirates on Monday night in Bailey.

Solo home runs from Carlee Beckham and Noel Dobbins tied it at 2-all in the fourth for Southern Nash (10-0 overall). Down 3-2 in the fifth, Anna Dickinson smashed a two-run homer to give her team the lead. SN then added two more runs inn the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single from Dickinson.

Dickinson finished with two hits and four RBI at the plate and pitched a complete game on the mound with 13 strikeouts for the Ladybirds.

Beckham and Addison Brumfield collected two hits as well for Southern.

RMA 9, FCA 0

Berkeley Miller threw a no-hitter with a whopping 19 strikeouts and three walks, while Landry Miller homered as Rocky Mount Academy defeated Fayetteville Christian at home on Monday afternoon.

Ams went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Eagles (5-1 overall) while Landry Miller and Ellen Feagans also provided a pair of hits in the victory.

RMA also stole six bases.

BASEBALL

NECP 22 North Edgecombe 1

North East Carolina Prep scored 10 runs in the first inning and 12 in the second to handle North Edgecombe in a nonconference game on Monday afternoon in Leggett.

Chanen Spain led the Huskies (3-4 overall) with two hits and three RBI, while Will Anderson (four RBI), Tyler Mizell (double), Jarrett Warren Kegan Boyd, Seth Peele, Andrew Sessoms (two RBI) and Gavyn Morris each added one hit.

North Edgecombe (0-3-1) had just two hits off Mizell, who picked up the mound win for NECP. He struck out two and allowed the only Warriors run in the second inning.

The Huskies took advantage of 11 walks by North Edgecombe pitchers and six errors by the defense.

SWE 6, Stow (OH) 1

SouthWest Edgecombe made the most of its five hits and scored four of its five runs in the third and fourth frames (two runs each) in a victory over Stow-Munroe Falls (Ohio) in a first-round game in the Pitt County Easter Tournament Monday afternoon at Farmville Central High School.

Derrick Davis doubled and drove in a run for the Cougars (5-4 overall) while Logan Webb (RBI), Tyler Mears, Trent Nichols and Chase Taylor also had hits. Parker Gay drove in a run.

Webb and Nichols stole three bases each for SWE.

Taylor worked four innings on the mound for the Cougars and allowed three hits and no runs with six strikeouts and three walks. Jarin Abrams fanned five and walked one while allowing one unearned run in three frames.

Southern Nash 7 Franklinton 2

The Firebirds improved to 4-1 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 7-4 overall with a league win at home on Monday night against Franklinton.

Landon Brown went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Firebirds, while Brennan Pridgen smacked a two-run home run in the first inning to give his team the lead.

Blake Strickland and Keegan Wallace also had hits for SN.

Strickland went five innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts. Brown allowed one hit and no runs in relief.

SOCCER

RMA 9, Kerr-Vance 0

The Rocky Mount Academy girls soccer team defeated Kerr Vance on Monday in Henderson by a score of 9-0.

Goals were scored by Taylor Carmichael (three), Hannah Garris (two), Chloe Achilles, Millar Berry, Caroline Epps and Matti Achilles. Assists were credited to Isabella Daza (four), Millar Berry (two), Hannah Garris (two) and Matti Achilles.

RMA improved to 8-0 overall.

Rocky Mount 8, SWE 0

Rocky Mount scored three goals in the first half and added five more in the second half to shut out SouthWest Edgecombe in a nonconference match on Monday in Pinetops.

The Gryphons improved to 3-2-1 overall, while the Cougars fell to 1-6 overall.

Nash Central 11, Tarboro 0

The Lady Bulldogs scored all of their goals in the first half on their way to a nonconference victory over the Vikings in Tarboro on Monday afternoon.

Nash Central improved to 5-2 overall with a season sweep over Tarboro, which remained winless at 0-4.
