Wesleyan tennis wins three of four over weekend

The North Carolina Wesleyan University tennis teams combined for three wins in four tries over the weekend.

The Bishops men’s tennis team won two of three matches.

NCWU stayed unbeaten in USA South Conference play (4-0) with a 9-0 win over Mary Baldwin on Saturday. They defeated Stevens 7-2 on Friday and fell to No. 13 Swarthmore (Pennsylvania) by a 5-4 score on Sunday to emerge 11-5 overall.

Against Swarthmore, the Bishops won all three doubles matches as the No. 1 team of Diego Segovia and Albert Sitwell defeated Michael Melnikov and Utham Koduri 8-4; the No. 2 team of John Falke and Logan Stoltz edged Rishi Verman and Rushil Patel 8-7 (7-2) and the No. 3 duo of Sean Keane and Andy Fanzaga slipped past Aadhi Raja and Max Lindstrom 8-7 (7-5).

Swarthmore rallied and won the match based on the strength of five singles victories: No. 1 Melnikov over Falke 6-3, 6-1; No. 2 Lindstrom over Segovia 6-3, 7-6 (10-8); No. 4 Winston Zhang over Keane 6-2, 3-6, 7-5; No. 5 Verma 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 over Fanzaga and No. 6 Lalith Suresh 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 over Bhodan Zhylchuk.

Wesleyan’s lone singles win came from Sitwell, who defeated Patel 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.

In Saturday’s win over Mary Baldwin, Wesleyan dropped just one game over five singles and two doubles matches.

Gustavo Rivas and Martin Cardesting (No. 1) and Brody Brice and Alvaro Gomez (No. 2) won their respective doubles matches by 8-0 scores. The No. 3 doubles team of Francesco Raparo and Alfonso Zerpa won by forfeit.

In singles, Gomez defeated Eric Layton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Cardesting won 6-0, 6-1 over Brandon Dewald at No. 2; Raparo dispatched Adrian Reyes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Rivas did the same (6-0, 6-0) to Brandon Kincaid at No. 4 and Brice eased past Brandon Murphy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Davide Simonini won by forfeit at No. 6 to complete the shutout.

In the victory over Stevens in Edgewater, N.J. on Friday, Wesleyan again took all three doubles matches as the No. 1 duo of Segovia and Sitwell won 8-6 over Olof Persson and Tristan Wroe; the No. 2 team of Falke and Stoltz won 8-4 over Vivek Harinarayan and Aashi Kulakami and the No. 3 pairing of Keane and Fanzaga got past Max-William Kanz and Samvid Andhare 8-7 (7-5).

The Bishops then took four of the six singles matches. Falke rallied to defeat Kulakami 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-6 at No. 1; Segovia defeated Harinarayan 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; Sitwell stopped Sebastian Wroe 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Keane rallied past Persson 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.

WOMEN

NCWU 9, Mary Baldwin 0

The North Carolina Wesleyan University women’s tennis team emerged 4-0 in the USA South Conference and 5-5 overall by shutting out league foe Mary Baldwin on Saturday in Rocky Mount.

The Bishops started with a sweep in doubles, as the No. 1 team of Elisa Mariotti and Cristina Mendoza Romero won 8-1 over Kelsey Bantel and Hannah Eastridge and the No. 2 duo of Bethan Fothergill and Andrea Elaez Miranda cruised to an 8-0 win over Lauren Byrnes and Gabrielle Wyatt at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Ajla Seliminvic and Ivanna Torres won by forfeit.

The sweep continued in singles. Two of the victories came by forfeit (Torres at No. 5 and Selimovic at No. 6). The Bishops also took No. 1 (Mariotti 6-0, 6-1 over Eastridge), No. 2 (Mendoza Romero 6-0, 6-0 over Bantel), No. 3 Elaez Miranda 6-0, 6-0 over Byrnes) and No. 4 (Fothergill 6-0, 6-0 over Wyatt).
