Protecting Patients at Nash General Hospital

In the beautiful mountains of Nash County, North Carolina, in the small town of Rocky Mount rests Nash General Hospital. This hospital has a huge impact on the local community, offering excellent patient care to people in need since it was founded in 1971. Nash General Hospital is a 282-bed facility and functions as the primary provider for Nash, Edgecombe and surrounding counties. In addition, Nash General Hospital features a Women’s Center, Cardiovascular Services, and a Critical Care Unit, and is home to thousands of employees who have dedicated their careers to provide the best medical attention possible.

So, when an emergency call came in from Nash General Hospital due to extreme water intrusion from their large skylights, CFE, Inc. operations in Apex, North Carolina, immediately jumped in to assist. After a comprehensive inspection of the roof, it was quickly determined the skylights were not the only culprit. Perimeter detachment, previous roof installation defects and the existing skylights were all noted to be problematic. So CFE, Inc. went quickly to work selecting a new assembly for this building.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Working with their corporate PreCon Department, CFE, Inc. recommended a full removal of the existing EPDM ballasted roof assembly, inspection of the lightweight concrete deck, and the installation of the new roof system. The new roof assembly consisted of nailing an SBS base sheet to the lightweight concrete and installing a 45-mil reinforced, fully adhered FiberTite-SM-FB Fleeceback membrane over the new SBS base sheet. The hospital received a 20-year warranty for the newly installed roof.

The first consideration was determining the best safety system for this particular project. CFE, Inc. used a combination warning line/positioning system to keep their people safe. Once the safety system was installed, the roof was loaded with materials and equipment and ready for removal. During the tear-off process, several linear feet of deteriorated perimeter wood blocking was discovered, and it had to be replaced along with several unit curbs.

Some skylights were in need of reflashing due to age to ensure no leaks would resurface. CFE, Inc. completed a water test on the skylights to verify their watertightness. Overall, the project went well and was completed 29 days early thanks to the joint efforts of CFE, Inc.’s Apex and Elmira, New York, divisions.

“A special ‘thank you’ was sent to Nash General Hospital personnel, which worked well with our teams when communicating and scheduling this important project,” says Bob Pringle, vice president of Evans Roofing Company, the parent company of CFE, Inc. “During the final inspection for warranty, Nash General Hospital personnel were invited along with CFE, Inc. to walk the new installation and see the professional work performed.”

The doctors and staff members at Nash General Hospital can concentrate entirely on patient care, knowing their roofs will not leak when it rains. “CFE, Inc. was honored to proud to be the contractor selected to install the hospital’s new roof,” says Pringle.
