Brevard County native and figure skater Brooklyn Wilson received a special honor at the Sunshine State Games after earning the Elizabeth "Betty" Stark award.

Brooklyn, 12, started her ice-skating career in Rockledge when she was 4 years old, and her father Brandon Wilson said she was ecstatic to win this honor.

"She gets a little nervous ahead of events and she knew the award was in Florida, but we told her it was at a different event," Brandon said. "She had no idea she won, so when she came to sit in the stands I said, 'do you realize you won the Stark award?' And she was as excited as a kid could be."

According to the Sunshine State Games website, the award "named after veteran Figure Skating Judge, Elizabeth "Betty" Stark, recognizes the Juvenile Girl with the highest points in the Juvenile Girls Free Skate program."

The juvenile category is the first qualifying level for figure skaters.

There were 12 girls competing in the free skate program and 17 girls competing in the short program in the juvenile category. Brooklyn finished first in both giving her two gold medals to go along with winning the Betty Stark award.

The Sunshine State Games, an event that featured a number of the state's top figure skaters, was held in Coral Springs from May 19-21.

Brooklyn's success at the Sunshine State Games extended her streak of being undefeated in competition this year.

She will compete in the sectional qualifiers this summer in Atlanta, Boston, and Charleston with the hopes of earning a spot in the national event.
