ROCKINGHAM — City residents will now have to separate some of their trash.
Public Works Director Lee Parris issued a letter on June 1 informing residents that, due to rule changes made by the county’s Solid Waste Department, there would be changes to the city’s pickup schedule for street trash and yard debris.
Parris said the county is now requiring all trash to be separated before it gets to the landfill.
Now, anything too large to fit in a trash container — including mattresses, appliances and boxes — will be picked up with normal household garbage on those scheduled days.
The so-called “street trash” must be placed in the street for pickup, Parris said.
Limbs, grass, pine straw and other yard debris will be picked up on Wednesdays, according to Parris.
“We ask that citizens separate debris piles,” Parris continued, “no household garbage or street trash in debris piles. We can no longer collect mixed piles.”
He added that the knuckle boom would continue to pick up large piles of yard debris Monday-Friday.
Implementation of the new policy was to begin “immediately.”
Parris said any residents not adhering to the new policy “may see a disruption” in collection.
