ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — An elderly woman is dead after a house fire Sunday on North Central Avenue.
It happened in the 600 block of North Central Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a bedroom window.
The damage was contained to the bedroom. The fire was controlled quickly, authorities said..
Crews had a very fast response time since trucks were on the way back from another fire.
The woman was the sole occupant of the house. The Winnebago County Coroner said she was not breathing when firefighters found her. She was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead at 7:03 p.m.
The victim’s identity is being withheld, pending notification of family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
