Multiple injuries were reported after a shooting at Martin Luther King Park Jr. Memorial Park in Rochester early Sunday morning, according to Rochester police.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., officers near the park heard gunshots and soon after received multiple 911 calls reporting a person shot, said Rochester Police Capt. Greg Bello. Officers arrived at the park and found a 33-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the lower body. Due to the seriousness of the injury, officers applied a tourniquet, and he was rushed to Strong Hospital, where it was determined the injury was non-life threatening, Bello said.

As the investigation continued, five additional victims were found and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Preliminary reports indicate that a group was hanging out in the park after hours when an argument broke out, leading to at least one person firing into the crowd before fleeing the scene, Bello said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police, responded due to the large size of the scene.

During efforts to disperse the crowd and treat victims, 38-year-old Joshua Sanchez allegedly obstructed officers and engaged in a physical altercation, resulting in an officer sustaining a lower body injury, Bello said.

Sanchez was taken into custody and is charged with second-degree assault, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest and harassment. He was taken to the Monroe County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is being asked to call 911.
