21-year-old man dies after being rushed into surgery after shooting

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A 21-year-old was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon after he was rushed to URMC following a shooting on Dewey Avenue, according to the Rochester Police Department.

RPD said Wednesday at around 3:15 p.m., 21-year-old Eric Martin dropped a family member off at work in the plaza at 1308 Dewey Avenue.

Officers say while he was in the parking lot, a passenger in a vehicle traveling north on Dewey Avenue leaned out the vehicle window and fired over a dozen gunshots into the plaza parking lot.

Martin was sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle when he was struck in the upper body by at least one of the gunshots. He was then rushed to URMC, where he remained in critical condition until just after 3 p.m. Thursday, when he was pronounced dead.

RPD said the motive behind the drive-by shooting is unknown at this time. Officers say they are unsure if Martin was the intended victim or if he was hit by an errant gunshot.

Police say no suspects are in custody at this time.

Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to call 911, or the Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157.
