Edward W. Gates

Edward W. Gates, 91, of Rochester formerly of Eustis, Florida passed away peacefully at 12:35 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023 at home.

Born on August 16, 1931 in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Clayton and Eunice (Johnson) Gates.

Edward was a graduate of the University of Florida.  He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Master Chief Petty Officer after 21 years of service.

Ed then worked along side his brother-in-law in the hardware business in Florida for over 40 years.  He was a member of Grace First United Methodist Church and the Fleet Reserve.  Ed enjoyed gardening, reading, tinkering on anything that needed fixed and was a proud member of the 100 gallon club of blood donation with the American Red Cross.  Ed and Donna also enjoyed traveling over the years visiting Costa Rica, the Panama Canal, Japan, Alaska, Scotland, England and other parts of Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Donna (Mohr) Bruce Gates of Rochester, step children, Barbara Clyde (Bob) of Kewanna, Daniel Bruce (Cora Lynn Weller) of Star City and Timothy Bruce (Jan) of Remington, and sister, Carolyn Barnett of Billings, Montana.  He is also survived by 9 step grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren. 

He was also preceded in death by brother, Clayton Gates, Jr., sister, Doris Thrower, step son, Jim Bruce, daughter in law, Vickie Bruce, sister-in-law, Mary and husband Ken Reutebuch and brother-in-law, Dave Barnett.

A Graveside Service with Military Rites will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2023 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Bruce Lake.
