Robstown, San Diego girls capture back-to-back state powerlifting titles

The Robstown girls powerlifting team captured its second consecutive state powerlifting title on Friday in Frisco.

FRISCO — The Robstown and San Diego girls powerlifting teams each captured back-to-back state championships after both squads claimed team titles on Friday at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association state meet in Frisco.

The Lady Pickers won the Class 4A small-school title with 40 points behind first-place performances by Jozannah Rodriguez (123); Olivia Morales (165); Leaya Alaniz (97) and Janessa Vela (198).

Rodriguez accomplished her goal of setting a new bench press record by pushing through 245 pounds and finished with a total of 905 pounds.

Morales lifted 975 pounds with Alaniz adding 750 and Vela lifting a team-best 1,030 pounds. Amelynne Olguin (105) and Jamie Casas (148) won silver medals for Robstown.

The Vaqueros finished with 26 points to win the Class 3A Division I title behind Taylor Garcia, who won gold in the 114-pound class by lifting a total of 845 pounds.

Aliana Garcia (220); Jalynn Garcia (181) and Janiya Sanchez each won silver to power San Diego's state title.

The San Diego girls powerlifting team won its second straight state championship on Friday in Frisco.

In Class 4A Division II, Orange Grove finished fifth behind state champion Victoria Pena, who lifted 1,015 pounds in the 220-pound class.

Hannah VanBlarcum placed second with 900 pounds in the 132 class and won outstanding deadlift in the light weight division.

In the Class 3A big schools, London's Paris Cruz placed third in the 123-pound class by lifting 890 pounds, including a state-record 410 pounds in the squat.

Also winning gold medals were Calallen's Kay Leak (114); Beeville's Sophie Sanchez (165) and Mya Martin (220); Freer's Sara Perez (114); Skidmore-Tynan's Marina Lopez (105) and Hebbronville duo Alexandra Gomez (97) and Gabby Ramos (259).

Gomez also broke the state squat record to earn the the outstanding squat award.

Other notable performances were Yaritsa Alanis (165) and Mirandas Salas (105) each winning individual state titles for Santa Gertrudis Academy.

Mathis' Kaila Sanchez (132); Tuloso-Midway's Alexus Valdez (165) and Ben Bolt's Breanna Palmer each won silver medals.
