Long before Iaeger became a railroad town, the narrow valley where Dry Fork enters the Tug Fork was already a natural passage through the mountains of what would become McDowell County. Water had carved routes through some of the roughest terrain in southern West Virginia, leaving only thin strips of bottomland between the rivers and the steep slopes rising above them. Later roads, railroads, homes, stores, and schools would all be forced into that same confined geography.

Jacobs Fork is one of those McDowell County places whose history is easier to find in railroad drawings and mine records than in traditional town histories. The name belonged to a stream, a community, a Norfolk and Western Railway branch, and eventually a major coal operation. Following those records through the twentieth century reveals how a narrow mountain drainage became part of one of the most heavily industrialized coal regions in Appalachia.

Appalachian Community Histories – Raven, Tazewell and Russell Counties: Raven Red Ash Coal, the N&W Railroad, and the Clinch. Raven can be difficult to place neatly on a historical map. Today the community is associated with both Tazewell and Russell Counties, although older records frequently identify Raven simply with Tazewell County. The companies that gave the community much of its twentieth-century identity complicated that geography even further because Raven Red Ash Coal Company controlled and worked mineral properties extending across the county line. Rather than being an error in the historical record, this uncertainty is part of Raven’s story and reflects the way communities, mineral holdings, transportation networks, and county boundaries overlapped throughout the Southwest Virginia coalfields.
