UPDATE 6/2: ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police has released more information regarding the crash that occurred on June 1, involving a Botetour County Sheriff’s vehicle carrying two inmates and a pickup truck.

VSP responded to the scene around 9:32 p.m. to the crash at the 133.8-mile marker on the southbound side of Interstate 81. The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was hit from behind by a pickup truck, causing the vehicle to overturn.

As previously reported, the deputy and the two inmates were taken to Lewis Gale Hospital for injuries, however, there is still no information on the driver of the vehicle.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) assisted with detours and lane closures while the roadway was closed for investigations and to remove the two vehicles. All lanes have been reopened.

UPDATE 11:30 P.M. ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office vehicle, transporting two inmates was involved in the crash that has traffic stopped on Interstate 81 going southbound in Roanoke County.

According to Virginia State Police, the sheriff’s office vehicle was hit from behind by a Ford pickup and overturned in the median afterward.

The deputy and two inmates were transported to Lewis Gale Medical Center for treatment, said VSP.

VDOT is setting up a traffic detour at the 137 exit to route traffic around the crash until the vehicles are removed.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Transportation alerts drivers of a car crash on I-81 South near mile marker 134 in Roanoke County causing delays.

All south lanes are closed at this time. Traffic backups are more than 3 miles long. Drivers should seek alternative routes at this time.
