With a new law, Boise enters the rat race. Here's what homeowners should know
Boise is adding teeth to its fight against invasive rats. The Boise City Council on Tuesday passed a new law designed to limit food and shelter for the animals, marking the council’s first formal step to combat the spread of Norway and roof rats in the Treasure Valley . Breaking the law can trigger Boise’s nuisance abatement process, which allows city staff to come in and clear the problem, possibly billing a property owner for associated costs. City departments need to comply with the rat rules by Nov. 1, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean said Tuesday. The law will take effect for the public on Dec. 1, she said. “We have all heard from the community that residents are worried about what is happening — the invasion of rats into our neighborhoods — and they’d like folks to help them understand the steps that they can take in their own homes,” McLean said. “But, also, they want to see the community and leaders across the region work together on some solutions.” Boise’s law is the first to arise out of cross-jurisdictional meetings around the Treasure Valley, which has anecdotally seen rat populations swell over the past several years. The law sets

No coffee and doughnuts? Dunkin' won't open in proposed Boise location after all
One of the busiest corridors in Boise won’t run on Dunkin’ after all. A proposed State Street site for the coffee-and-doughnut chain’s expansion into the Treasure Valley has been nixed. About seven months after it was revealed that Dunkin’ planned to invade the Boise area, paperwork was filed with the city to take over a Papa Murphy’s pizza restaurant at 6940 W. State St. It’s a relatively high-profile location at Northgate Shopping Center. But on Friday, the architect working on the Dunkin’ project requested that the application be withdrawn. Parties involved were not able to come to an agreement, according to a letter to the city, and building ownership decided not to proceed with the Dunkin’ buildout. The letter referenced concerns about the lack of a grease trap or interceptor in the building. In January, JP Green, partner and retail brokerage specialist at real estate company TOK Commercial , said that Dunkin’ sees potential for up to 20 or more Treasure Valley locations. But so far, no Dunkin’ sites have been formally announced. “I can confirm we are close to signing three leases for Dunkin’,” he told the Statesman weeks ago, “but can’t comment on where until the ink is
