Update: North Avenue road closure, sewer work delayed in Fresno for now
UPDATE: The city delayed construction scheduled for the North Avenue sewer main rehabilitation project “due to unforeseen delays in material delivery and to avoid construction-related closures during the holiday season,” the communications department told media Friday. An updated schedule will be provided at a later time. Original story: North Avenue from Cedar Avenue to Highway 99 will close to traffic for the first three weeks of November, the City of Fresno announced Thursday. The closure will be in place 24/7 for sewer main rehabilitation beginning Nov. 2 and is expected to continue through Nov. 20. Traffic will detour to Central Avenue. Additional closures will follow as construction progresses, and driver should expect delays in the area, the city said in a press release Thursday. Drivers traveling on southbound Highway 99 are recommended by the city to use Jensen or Central Avenue for destinations east of Highway 99. Drivers on northbound Highway 99 are recommended to use Central or Jensen for destinations west of Highway 99. The Cedar and North Avenue exit may still be used for destinations east of the 99. “Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes or expect delays. Schedule is pending weather or unforeseen delays,”

Historic downtown Fresno road blocked for street mall in 1964 to be restored for traffic
A roadway connection that was lost over 60 years ago in downtown Fresno is being restored. The development of the Fulton Mall in 1964 closed several sections of nearby streets to traffic, including a stretch of Merced Street next to Hotel Fresno. Construction is underway for the “Merced Street Reconstruction Project,” which the city said Wednesday will improve access for residents, businesses and visitors downtown. The project calls for reconnecting approximately 600 feet of Merced Street between H Street and Congo Alley, restoring a portion of downtown’s original street grid. This area was converted into a walkway upon Fulton Mall’s development. “This project is about much more than building 600 feet of roadway,” Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said in a statement. “It’s about reconnecting our downtown, restoring a piece of Fresno’s history and creating new opportunities for investment.” A separate project to extend Broadway by about 230 feet is also planned that will carry traffic through to the Merced Street extension, according to the release. Historical significance The city identified the need for the “Merced Street Reconstruction Project” in its Downtown Specific Plans, which were approved by the council in 2018. The project also aims to enhance access to the

High-speed rail forced La Tapatia to move its Fresno store. Customers still can't find it
For decades, La Tapatia Tortilleria ran a little store on Belmont Avenue. It was a place to sell the tortillas, chips and other products it makes in its downtown factories to the public, instead of shipping them directly off to grocery stores, restaurants and school cafeterias. In recent months, the store was bombarded by the rubble and noise of the construction of California’s high-speed rail and related work, leading to an “extreme loss in business,” said Yvette Cuellar, director of public relations and marketing for the company and daughter of the founder. So in late September, it moved the store, with some financial help from the High-Speed Rail Authority. But its troubles aren’t over. Some customers still can’t find it. The old store and the new La Tapatia store Today, the new La Tapatia Retail Outlet is in a bright orange building at 403 N. H St. It’s not on a major thoroughfare. It’s on a stretch of H Street — north of the intersection of H and Palm Avenue, moving away from downtown — that most people don’t drive unless they’re pulling a milk truck into the Producers Dairy plant. “It’s really difficult to find us,” Cuellar said. “It’s
