Rivalry matchups highlight top games to watch in Week 11, predictions
It's the final week of the Tulare County high school football regular season. That means it's rivalry week. Here are the top Tulare County games to watch in Week 11 (all games are on Friday, Oct. 30, unless noted), plus the Visalia Times-Delta's predictions. Tulare Western (8-1, 3-1) at Tulare Union (4-5, 2-2), 6:30 p.m., Bob Mathias Stadium A Tulare Western win clinches an outright East Yosemite League title for the Mustangs. Tulare Western last captured a league championship during the 2019 season. Tulare Union can force a five-way tie for the EYL crown with a victory against their rival Mustangs. If that happens, Tulare Union, Tulare Western, Central Valley Christian, Hanford and Redwood would all finish with a 3-2 record in EYL play. Recent history favors the Tribe, too. Tulare Union has won six straight Bell Games. Tulare Western's last Bell Game victory came in 2019. Tulare Union's Demaje Riley (39 catches, 727 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns) and Tulare Western receiver Amarion Taylor (76 catches, 1,507 receiving yards, 23 receiving touchdowns) are two of the Central Section's premier wideouts. This year's game is the 62nd meeting between the two schools. Times-Delta prediction: Tulare Western 34, Tulare Union 27

It’s in the numbers: KCUSD’s mathematical thinking shift
DUNLAP – Around four years ago, educators at Dunlap Elementary School asked themselves what learning would look like if math was different. They weren’t trying to reinvent thousands of years of study and mathematical proofs. Two plus two would still equal four, and triangles would still have three sides with angles that add up to 180 degrees. Instead, they wanted to change how students thought about and viewed the subject.

Hanford's huge win could lead to challenging Central Section playoff matchup
Hanford High is peaking at the right time after two straight losses. The problem is that the Bullpups’ reward could be a disheartening matchup when the Central Section playoffs begin. Jerren Mao accounted for four touchdowns, and Hanford’s defense intercepted five passes as The Bee’s 15th-ranked Bullpups handed No. 5 Tulare Western its first loss of the season, earning a 42-25 victory over the Mustangs at Bob Mathias Stadium on Thursday night. The victory could land Hanford in Division I-AA, potentially setting up a first-round matchup against Central East. “We’re hitting our stride at the right time,” Hanford coach Cannon Sanchez said. Sanchez, who has been the Bullpups’ head coach for seven years, recalled his team’s postseason run in 2021, following an 8-1 regular season. Hanford faced Central East in the first round of the 2021-22 playoffs, falling 62-16 in a Division I matchup. “We have no business up there with 1,480 students,” Sanchez said. “The CIF has the power and does nothing about it. Hoping they do the right thing and at least put us down to D-1A.” Central Section playoff pairings will be announced next weekend. Sanchez anticipates Hanford could face Central East again, but he hopes the

Merced dominates Los Banos, closes in on another CCC championship
When Merced High receiver Israel Rodas is matched up man-to-man, he knows there is a good chance the ball is coming his way. Rodas torched Los Banos for three first-half touchdown catches to help propel the Bears to a 49-12 win on Friday night at Cathie Hostetler Stadium. Rodas finished with five catches for 102 yards in the first half. I get very excited when I know they are playing me man-to-man,” Rodas said. “I already know I’m going to get the ball. I just have to catch it and run.” Rodas started the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Raul Moreno midway through the first quarter. The Merced defense came up with a big turnover, forcing the ball out of Los Banos quarterback Moises Perez’s hands before he could cross the goal line. Merced’s Anthony Ward scooped up the fumble and ran 73 yards before he was tackled at the Tigers’ 25-yard line. Three plays later, Moreno found Rodas in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0 with 5:50 left in the second quarter. Moreno later connected with Rodas for a 41-yard touchdown pass to give the Bears a 21-0 lead
