RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Whoever said that the best defense is a good offense should have checked out the Ridgewood boys lacrosse team's latest victory against Ramapo on Saturday morning. The undefeated Maroons locked up their opponents in a dominant shutout win to go to 9-0 on the season.

Ramapo could not seem to get anything going on offense —Ridgewood dominated the time of possession and any time Ramapo seemed poised to start a productive offensive possession, the Maroons would force a turnover. Additionally, goalie Matthew Roughgarden was a brick wall in the net, turning away every shot that came his way as he recorded Ridgewood's first shutout of the season.

"I thought our defense did a nice job," said Head Coach Mike Pounds. "Matt [Roughgarden] did a great job in the goal. Matt Hogan did a great job with face-offs, giving us those extra possessions. It is what we needed to do to beat that team. They are well-coached and they have some talented kids. It was a good overall team effort."

Meanwhile, on offense, Ridgewood got scoring contributions from AJ LaSauro, Jack Schultz, Charlie Merrick and Will Yates, who combined for eight goals. If Ramapo had any prayer of a comeback, it was promptly extinguished by LaSauro, who added an exclamation mark to the game with goals at the 1:36 and 31.1 marks in the fourth. The Maroon offense has been just as impressive as their defense through the first nine games, as they have yet to score less than eight goals in a game.

With so much success to begin the year, it is imperative for Coach Pounds to ensure that the team remains grounded and focused on the ultimate prize: a State title. "It is pretty easy," said Coach Pounds of keeping his players locked in. "We have a lot of tough games ahead of us. We are 9-0, but those games are behind us now, so we have got to focus on what is next."
