Meridian gets revenge on rival to continue bounce-back season
MERIDIAN — The two meetings between Mountain View and Meridian last year weren’t close. The Mavericks posted nearly 100 points combined and shut out the Warriors in both matchups. It was a much different story in this year’s clash. The two West Ada School District rivals met at Mountain View High on Friday where Meridian shut down the Mavericks for most of the night. Mountain View hardly sustained any drives as the Warriors continued their bounce-back campaign. Meridian defeated the Mavericks 21-14 to move to 5-2, matching its win total from the last two years combined. In his first year as head coach with the school after moving over from Capital, Kevin Hastin has helped lead the program back in a winning direction. Before 2024, the Warriors had not had a losing record since 2019. “The culture just changed,” Meridian linebacker Leo Klinger said about the team’s turnaround this season. “He came in, turned the program around and everyone is here for it. We’re all a team. We trust each other. We’ll die for each other.” Last year, Mountain View went a combined 90-0 in two games over Meridian. This time around, the Mavericks could barely reach plus territory. Only

2027 Idaho Teacher of the Year works with ‘purpose and intention’
BOISE — Amanda Holland didn’t always want to be a teacher. She wasn’t born one. She didn’t dream of a career in education when she was a little girl. Instead, motherhood helped launch Holland into what has been a successful 23-year career for the 2027 CapEd Credit Union Idaho Teacher of the Year. Among many things, Holland teaches second grade at Boise School District’s Washington Elementary School, in Boise. Along with her husband, Gordon, and two adult sons, Stuart and Parker, Holland stood in the Washington Wildcats’ gymnasium on Wednesday morning amongst many of her teaching peers from inside and out of BSD, about 10 classes full of children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade and 2026 Idaho Teacher of the Year Laron Johnson. Johnson teaches social studies and economics at Jefferson Joint School District’s Rigby High School in Rigby. Holland told the students how she wound up heading down her teaching path. “I had children of my own and I was inspired by things that were happening in their classrooms,” Holland said to the students who were quietly sitting cross-legged. “I decided that I would go back to school and be a teacher. These are my two sons, Stuart and
