Loved ones of Richmond man facing 12 years in prison abroad speak out in support

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Family, coworkers and friends of Tyler Wenrich — a Richmond man who faces a minimum 12-year sentence for allegedly bringing ammunition onto Turks and Caicos during a cruise — are speaking out in support of their loved one.

According to ABC , Tyler Wenrich was on a cruise celebrating his friend’s bachelor party when the ship made a stop in Grand Turk. When Tyler attempted to return aboard, he was stopped by security, who reportedly found two hunting bullets in his backpack.

In the U.S., these sorts of incidents would not normally result in jail time, with the offender typically receiving a fine. In Turks and Caicos, however, the law requires a mandatory minimum 12-year prison sentence.

“I’ve been feeling like I was drowning,” Jeriann Wenrich, Tyler’s wife, said in a statement provided by ABC. “Just so scared that my family would never be whole again.”

According to Jeriann, this was a complete accident.

“I understand that there’s laws and regulations,” Jeriann told ABC during a recent interview. “But there should be fairness and grace when it comes to things — especially the intent of them. [Tyler had] no intent to harm anybody.”

Jeriann tearfully described the last conversation she had with her husband before he was taken to prison.

“My son shouldn’t have to grow up without a father,” Jeriann said during the interview.

According to the company’s CEO, Blanton Machese, Tyler Wenrich is the Vice President of Emergency Services Solutions, Inc., which is based in Powhatan County.

In an April 29 statement provided to 8News, the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad also shared its support for Tyler. According to its chief, TJ Smith, Tyler is a longtime crewmember and a former Captain.

Smith said that the squad remains behind Tyler despite these grave circumstances.
