Digging into your roots? Learn some little-known genealogy tips at Library of Virginia workshop

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Library of Virginia will be holding an intermediate genealogy workshop in early May, shining a light on little-known records some might overlook while digging into their roots.

During the workshop, “Out of the Shadows: Little-Known Records for Virginia Genealogy,” Library of Virginia archivists Courtney Thompson and Nathan Verilla will walk attendees through some valuable but underutilized records that could aid those researching their families.

The types of records to be discussed include:

  • Virginia penitentiary records
  • Prohibition Commission records
  • State mental hospital records
  • Court order books
  • Business records
  • Militia commission records
Virginians asked to ‘keep bears wild’ this spring

This workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, in Library conference rooms A, B and C. The Library of Virginia is located at 800 E Broad St. in Richmond.

The workshop costs $25 per person, or $20 if you are a Library of Virginia Foundation member.
