The number of women-owned businesses in Richmond is booming, according to a recent Yelp report.

Why it matters: Beyoncé was right when she said girls run the world.

The big picture: Richmond had the fourth highest growth rate of women-owned businesses in the U.S. between 2022 and 2023.

  • This translates to a 59% increase in new women-owned businesses, or 269 openings last year compared to 169 in 2022.
  • Some of the sectors driving that jump were home and local services, Yelp tells Axios.
  • Nationally, the growth rate was 17%, led by the hotels and travel sector.

Flashback: Yelp also found that Richmond held the No. 2 spot in the nation for most Black-owned business openings last year.

Sabrina's thought bubble: Speaking of women-owned businesses, some of my Richmond favorites are Buna Kurs in Jackson Ward, Ruby Scoops in Brookland Park and Native Plate downtown.
